For a change of perspective, this time I’m pleased to announce that I’m on the jury of International Nature and Environmental Film, a historic Hungarian nature documentary film festival.

An experience that has given me the opportunity to discover many beautiful nature films that not only immerse us in the wilderness of many different countries, but also narrate the global environmental problems that now destroy every ecosystem. It is also interesting to observe how many films deal with the theme of #Rewild, meaning how the planet can be re-naturalised in an effort to restore biodiversity. This raises a fundamental question about the human-nature relationship and how, although rewild is certainly a right direction, the ways of ‘protection’ and ‘conservation’, which also include the manipulation of nature, have yet to be deeply explored, as these documentaries tell us.

This weekend I will have the privilege of attending the festival at the Royal Castle in Gödöllő, near Budapest, and to reflect on the not easy question of man’s place in nature…

Zero Waste in Gipuzkoa – Spain

Zero Waste Europe, an NGO based in Brussels, asked us to produce a video to document the European cities which have adopted the Zero Waste Strategy. We first visited a region in the Spanish side of the Basque country. Gipuzkoa is the smallest province in Spain and a place where Zero Waste is very efficient. They have doubled the amount of recycled waste in 5 years and in the process they saved 250 million thanks to the fact that they did not build an incinerator. You can see some images of the shooting and an article in Basque, of the day we interviewed the young mayor of Tolosa.

Briancon’s Mountain canals

Our first project dedicated to the Intangibile Cultural Heritage has given us the opportunity to discover the natural beauties of the southern region called Hautes-Alps (PACA). Furthermore we took the chance to discover the mountain canals which gather the water from the mountains surrounding Briancon and they are used to irrigate the fields in the valleys. Specific to Briancon it is the only place in the world where the canals also arrive in the centre of this town of 2000 inhabitants.

In the coming months we will be able to tackle a new ecological project which is related to the Intangible Cultural Heritage/ICH. The project originated from my long-standing obsession to protect the environment and the encounter with Francesca Cominelli, an expert in ICH. Our intention is to look into our past and find new solutions for the future. Keeping this in mind, we applied to a new announcement by the Culture and Communication Ministry. Shooting will begin in April!
